This course is designed to provide participants with basic core skills and knowledge to co-facilitate Family Life Education programmes. The course will provide participants both theory and practice, as well as opportunities to work with Voluntary Welfare Organisations that run Family Life Education programmes.
Note: Completion of this course does not qualify participants to become a qualified Family Life Educator. Participants will, however, be able to facilitate programmes in the presence of a qualified Family Life Educator.
Course Contents
Module 1: Overview of Family Life Education
This module explores the current trends in Family Life Education (FLE) and the various programmes, talks and workshops that are being conducted. To keep participants up to date with the state of family life and Family Life Education, the module will also discuss the effectiveness of these programmes, what has been helpful, relevant areas and issues that require more focus on.
Module 2: Human Growth and Lifespan Development
This module considers the theories and research findings regarding the development of human growth from conception to death and the different family stages. It will also explore different aspects of family life, including personal life developmental cycle, family life cycle, relationship with self, relationship with family, relationship with significant others and family crisis management.
Module 3: Marriage Education
This module examines all issues pertaining to the formation, maintenance and the different phases of the couple-hood relationship. It also explores the transitions and adjustments in marital life, teaches participants to identify the 4 major divorce predictors and ways to nurture and protect marriages.
Module 4: Parenting Education
This module provides participants with an understanding of the importance of couples being involved in parenting. It will explore children's needs and the various parenting styles in different developmental stages. It will also cover topics on human personalities, parenting models, effective communication and parenting skills, as well as strategies to improve family unity.
Module 5: Family Relationships in an Aging Society
As an individual ages, many changes and development happen which has an impact not only on the individual alone but also on the people around them. This module provides insights into aging, as well as the changes and adjustments to outlook and lifestyle an individual has to go through as he/she ages. The module will also look at intergenerational issues and the strategies and skills required to build harmonious relationships.
Module 6: Group Dynamics
This module examines the process of group development and dynamics of groups. It will help participants identify and develop skills in group facilitation. Topics such as group theories, quality of group facilitators, planning for a group work, how to start and end a group session effectively will also be explored.
Module 7: Programme Development
This module seeks to equip participants with the skills to develop a FLE talk/workshop. Participants will learn the process of designing programmes, starting from needs assessment to the selection of topics, preparation of materials and programme evaluation. The techniques of how to promote, market and sustain FLE programmes will also be covered.
Module 8: Interpersonal Skills
This module will explore the topic on empathy which forms the foundation of healthy human relationships. Participants can expect to learn about self awareness, active listening skills and developing effective interpersonal skills.
Module 9: Effective Presentation Skills
This module will prepare the participants for public speaking. They will understand and learn how to plan, prepare and make a verbal presentation. It will help them learn to speak confidently and deliver the message effectively in a small and large group setting.
