First Aid Refresher

Course details

This first aid refresher course is intended for those who wish to refresh their skills as occupational first aiders. Topics covered include; responsibilities of first aider, examination of unconscious casualty and resuscitation. This course is essential to all employers as they must provide adequate numbers of trained occupational first aiders on a work premises. This is stated under the 2005 Safety Health and Welfare Act and updated in the May 2008 First Aid Guidelines.

This course is classroom based; it is highly interactive with role-playing and practical exercises to reinforce understanding and learning.

Assessment: Practical and written assessments.

Accreditation: On full completion of this course each participant will receive a FETAC Level 5 Award

Course Objectives

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate practical first aid skills to Occupational First Aider standard.
• Explain new developments in First Aid.

Target Audience

This course is intended for certified first aiders who wish to keep up with developments in first aid practice and to refresh skills that may be only occasionally used.

Course Contents

• Chain of Survival / Scene Safety / Responsibilities of First Aider
• Unconsciousness – Examination of unconscious casualty / Recovery position
• Resuscitation – Practical demonstration and class practice / Asphyxia / Heart attack / Approach and treatment
• Bleeding and Wounds – Control of bleeding and wounds including amputation, wounds with a foreign body, internal bleeding, assessment of fractures and appropriate treatment
• Injuries – Examination of the eye, treatment of foreign bodies and chemical splashes in the eye
• Burns and Scalds / Poisoning – causes and treatment / Epilepsy / Asthma / Crush injuries – approach and treatment
