Course details

This module is designed to provide the learner with knowledge of the composition of food and an understanding of how food affects an individual’s personal well-being.

Preferred Entry Level

Level 4 FETAC Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.

Who should complete this course?

People who wish to pursue a career and work in the fields of health, complementary therapy, nutrition and physical fitness. Or students who wish to study Nutrition at Level 5

Progression

The module is mandatory for the Level 5 Certificate in Community and Health Services - Nursing Studies award. It may also be included as an elective vocational module on a range of FETAC awards.

General Aims

  1. Learners who successfully complete this module will:
  2. be familiar with the composition of food
  3. evaluate the nutritional content of food
  4. understand the relationship between health and nutrition
  5. interpret current dietary information and recommendations
  6. examine eating habits
  7. be familiar with the nutritional needs of different groups of
  8. people
  9. acquire a range of practical techniques.

Specific learning outcomes

The course is grouped into the following 4 units.

  1. Composition of Food
  2. Nutrition and Health
  3. Nutrition and Exercise
  4. Food Labelling

Student Requirements

All course notes are provided. Students required complete homework and assignments out of class (2-4hrs per week). Students are required to have access to a computer with Word Processing software and printer for submission of assignments and homework.

Portfolio of Assessment

Assessment is by examination and 2 assignments.
