Course details

Leaving Certificate standard with possible prior experience, competent swimming ability and genuine interest in the sports. Given the nature of this course it is expected that students be physically equipped to cope on occasion with difficult weather conditions. Students must be older.

Certification

The activity modules are all assessed by the National Governing Bodies of the relevant sports. In the interest of good standards and quality assurance we use external assessors. A range of Fetac Lev 4 and Lev 5 modules are completed.

Course Content

In first year students develop their personal proficiency skills in the practical modules while their classwork deals with the theory associated with all of the adventure sports such as first aid, environmental studies, navigation and leadership, expedition planning and the business of outdoor recreation. Modules covered are:

  • Outdoor Recreation
  • Environmental Understanding
  • Communications
  • Work Experience
  • Occupational First Aid
  • Kayak Skills (Lev 4)
  • Rockclimbing (Lev 4)
  • Dinghy Sailing (Lev 4)
  • Mountain Skills Training
  • Water Safety 

Kayaking

Begins with pool sessions and proceeds on to the river, white water paddling, touring, sea-kayaking and competitive canoeing. Students are encouraged to achieve Level 3 Kayak Proficiency, complete training for Level 2 Kayak Instructor/Level 1 Coach and then complete assessment.

Mountaincraft

Navigation, basic rock- climbing, bivouacking and camping, Safety and First Aid. and environmental issues. Wicklow, the Mournes, the Reeks and other mountain regions are used for training. Students are assessed at Mountain Skills (Hillwalking Proficiency) level by An Bord Oiliuin Sleibhe (the Mountain Training Board).

Dingy Sailing/Powerboating

Certification is by the I.S.A. The course is centered in our watersports base on Blessington Lake. The target awards are Level II Instructor. The target awards are Level II ISA awards in both dinghy sailing and safety boat handling. Assessments take place at Glenaans Sailing Centre, Collanmore Island, Co.Mayo or at Avon Ri in Blessington.

Snorkelling

Students will train and present themselves for Snorkelling Instructor certificate assessed by CFT (Irish Underwater Council)

Rock Climbing

Students begin their training in Dalkey Quarry and eventually progress to other climbing crags. The focus is on personal climbing ability in first year and leads to SPA (Single Pitch Assessment) training. Students would be encouraged to progress sufficiently to complete an assessment before the end of 2nd year.

Facilities

A wide range of equipment for kayaking, Open Canadian canoeing and rock climbing. Our out-centre for snorkeling is at the Curragh Sub Aqua Club in Sandycove. Our Watersports base on Blessington Lake has a variety of craft including Darragh 14 and G.P. 14 dinghies. Toppers and Achats supported by two Jenneau rescue craft.

About St. Kevin's College Crumlin

St. Kevin's College was established by the City of Dublin Education and Training Board and opened its doors to the first group of students. Today the College offers a wide range of career focused Further Education Courses which are designed to suit the needs of today's students, who are either interested in improving their employment opportunities directly in the workplace or in continuing to Higher Education in Institutes of Technology or Universities here in Ireland or in the UK.
