    This course is a very practical introduction to extrusion, the major focus of the course is to practice the correct techniques to start and stop an extruder, set up correctly using the correct tooling, and avoid the common issues such as degradation, ovality, concentricity issues, leaks from the die head, etc.

    COURSE CONTENT

    Overview of Extrusion

    • Safety in extrusion – heat, pressure, electrical and material degradation issues.
    • Overview of the various parts of an extruder and the extrusion line.
    • The melting process in a single screw extruder.
    • Extruder screws- what the different screw designs available can achieve.
    • How to calculate the correct die and tip size for tube extrusion.

    Start-up and Shut-down Procedures

    • Correct procedure to shut down an extruder
    • Ensuring tooling is cleaned and handled and assembled correctly and safely.
    • Preventing tooling damage
    • Correct procedure to disassemble, clean and reassemble the die
    • Correct die tightening procedure
    • Screw removal and cleaning procedure

    Achieving Product Specifications

    Correct threading up procedure and points to watch for

    • How to check the product and adjust the process parameters to achieve product specification
    • Understanding the interactions between the process parameters when making adjustments to the process to achieve product specifications.

    Quality Control

    • The importance of quality control procedures
    • How to set up and record control charts
    • Sampling procedures and sample sizes
    • How to read control charts to check for product drifting out of specification

    Troubleshooting

    • How to analyse a defect to find the cause
    • Understanding basic extrusion problems:
    • Unstable melt/ Die flow problems
    • Sharkskin/ Melt Fracture
    • Gels
    • Degradation (heat/ mechanical)

    First Polymer Training (FPT) Skillnet operates as a training network for the  Plastics Industry in Ireland and is funded under the government’s Skillnets initiative. The aim of FPT Skillnet is to deliver training that is focused on the specific needs of the plastics industry and includes certification and development.

    Initiated by Plastics Ireland, FPT Skillnet’s objective is to provide technical training to polymer processors, both at our centre in Athlone and in-company as required. Our administrative and course centre is now located at 7  Centre  Court, Blyry Business and Commercial Park, Athlone.

    A full range of plastics processing equipment is available including Fanuc (100 tonne Electric), Krauss Maffei (100 tonne Hydraulic) and Demag (25 tonne Hydraulic) moulding machines.  They are delighted to announce Arburg UK have replaced the ARBURG ALLROUNDER 320C 500 170 50 tonne machine with a new ARBURG ALLROUNDER 420C 1000 290 100 tonne golden Edition machine. This machine is equipped with the latest SELOGICA Direct touch screen control.

    Having a full range of  plastics processing equipment on site allows FPT to deliver  intensive hands on training.
