Course details
If you have not undertaken formal study for sometime and are concerned regarding your academic study and writing skills, you are strongly advised to undertake the access module (Academic Writing and Learning Skills Module - available through the Centre for Lifelong Learning) prior to attempting any stand alone module.
Applicants will normally:
- A. Be a registered nurse on the register maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
OR
- B. Be registered on the appropriate professional register.
AND
- C. Be currently employed in health care either in: clinical practice/management/ research /education. Some modules may only be undertaken while working in a specific related area. This is specified in module descriptions.
- AND HAVE GAINED:
- A primary degree (min. 2.2) (health sciences related) or evidence of equivalent academic credits. Students who do not have the aforementioned will be required to provide evidence of their ability to study at post-graduate level.
- D. Students whose first language is not English will require a degree of fluency in the English language.
- Credits from stand alone modules can be accrued towards the award of Post Graduate Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing Studies/Professional Studies).
- Many of our stand-alone modules are delivered through blended learning/e-learning allowing you the option of studying at your own pace in your own home.
Programme Overview
The aim of the module is to provide students with an opportunity to develop an understanding of ethical perspectives and issues relevant to their professional practice. At the end of the module, students will be able to demonstrate an awareness of the distinctiveness of major historical and contemporary ethical theories and relate these to the working environment. A central theme in the module will be the relationship between ethical theory and practice. As part of this, particular emphasis will be placed on on-going reflection on the complexity of ethical decision-making in professional situations. Students will be invited to explore their own ethical positions in the light of new learning.
