Course details

Following an introduction to the course and the subject, you will be guided through a history of epilepsy, which provides a greater understanding of how the disorder had previously been understood and the treatments that had been developed. You will gain an understanding of epilepsy as a condition, how it falls under the category of 'neurological disorder' and the factors that could increase the chances of a person contracting the condition.

You will discover the ways in which someone may acquire epilepsy - either from hereditary or defective genes or through other causes, such as brain damage or stroke, etc. In the case of a separate condition leading to epilepsy forming, you will learn how it can be prevented before it occurs.

Epilepsy is known to cause seizures in those who suffer from it, but these are not all the same, they have several forms. The Epilepsy Awareness Course describes the six main types of seizure and what happens within the body when they take hold. After a seizure, there is a short period, known as the postictal period, where the body and mind start to regain their strength and awareness. This is explained further in the course.

You will learn the effects that seizures have on those with epilepsy. Both the long and short-term physiological impact on the body and the psychological effects on the mind, such as the social isolation often experienced by those with the condition, are explained.

There have been various methods and treatments for epilepsy. You will learn about both the useful ones and even those that have been banned for causing serious side effects. With much modern scientific development and innovation in this field, the course also discusses the latest, rather than most conventional, methods of treatment, including alternative treatments and how these are making their way into the mainstream. Alternative methods covered include herbal treatment and homoeopathic medicine, which have both proven effective in reducing the effects of epilepsy.

Epilepsy has an impact on the day-to-day life of the sufferer and their family members, but it can be managed. The Epilepsy Awareness Diploma Course shows you the necessary precautions to take in daily life and positive ways family members can adapt to the situation. You will also explore the difficulties those with epilepsy can face in achieving life goals such as marriage, graduation, and careers, and how these difficulties can be overcome.

For some, the side effects of epilepsy can be especially severe, with rare cases including SUDEP, brain malfunctions and other disabilities that can be fatal. You will learn about each of these conditions and the how they develop, and the rare conditions that cause and are caused by epilepsy.

As with any condition, epilepsy comes with certain costs - financial, emotional, and psychological. You will learn about the financial costs to the healthcare system to provide people with epilepsy with a 'normal' life, the types of facilities required to improve their quality of life, and what more can be done. The emotional and psychological costs to the patient and caregivers are also high. You will explore the problems faced by both and the ways these can be averted or supported.

To help patients and their caregivers in the UK, there are several online support groups, organisations and educational facilities that have been established to help tackle the condition and its effects. The Epilepsy Awareness Diploma Course talks you through the extra aid available.

Currently, there is a lot of research and development going into finding new cures, medications and treatments for epilepsy, along with new and innovative methods of prevention and management. This course outlines the research that is being worked on by various national and multinational research organisations and medical centres.
