English as a Foreign Language (All Levels)

Course details

Students will be recruited from most parts of the world, especially from Asia. Most students should have acquired a basic level of English in their previous studies; however, there are some that may be complete beginners. The majority of the learners would have experience in a teacher-centred classroom, where the teacher is the main participant. Students may need to adjust to a different classroom environment where different teaching strategies and methodologies are used. Some of the learners might also need to adapt themselves to self-directed learning and research.

Structure & Outline

The course will focus on the following 4 main areas:

Writing and Grammar

1. Learn essential elements of the sentence (i.e., parts of speech)
2. Recognize and use simple tenses in affirmative, negative, and interrogative forms
3. Introduce simple and compound sentences in affirmative, negative, and interrogative forms
4. Write descriptive sentences
5. Learn how to use a bilingual dictionary

Reading and Vocabulary

1. Emphasize massive vocabulary acquisition
2. Develop reading skills and strategies using simple stories, texts and articles
3. Be able to comprehend passages of 100 words
4. Become familiar with parts of speech in decoding process
5. Improve oral reading fluency
6. Discuss various topics from adapted works of fiction and non-fiction (current events, magazine articles)
7. Learn to enjoy reading in English!

Listening and Speaking

1. Speak confidently and effectively in a variety of everyday survival situations
2. Understand expected behaviour in these everyday survival situations
3. Improve clarity and accuracy of pronunciation through accent reduction training
4. Learn the sounds, rhythms and intonation of standard English

Pronunciation

1. Understand and use rising and falling English intonation
2. Understand and use English rhythm
3. Understand and use common English word stress patterns
4. Understand and use English consonants
5. Understand and use English vowels

Mode and Duration

This is a Full-Time Programme and consists of five different levels:

• Certificate in English as a Foreign Language Level 1 (Foundation) (3 Months)
• Certificate in English as a Foreign Language Level 2 (Elementary) (3 Months)
• Certificate in English as a Foreign Language Level 3 (Pre - Intermediate) (3 Months)
• Certificate in English as a Foreign Language Level 4 (Intermediate) (3 Months)
• Certificate in English as a Foreign Language Level 5 (Upper-Intermediate) (3 Months)

Examination

We conduct continuous assessments throughout the term.

Entry Requirements

All new students must sit for a Placement Test which may include an oral interview. This is free-of-charge and is designed to test your English language level.

Graduation Requirement

• Minimum score of 50% in each skill (writing, speaking, grammar, reading and listening)
• Minimum attendance of at least 75%

Award

Students will be awarded the Academies Australasia College Certificate in English As A Foreign Language of the respective level upon successful completion of the level.
