Course details

This course is aimed at those who wish to work in either the Fire Service or Ambulance Service. Learners who successfully complete the course will gain essential knowledge and skills in areas relevant to these careers.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Practical exeprience, Leaving Certificate, L.C.A. or equivalent. All applicants are interviewed and places are awarded on suitability. Mature students without formal qualifications are also welcome to apply.

COURSE CONTENT

The following subjects may be offered:

Safety and Health at Work

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to promote and maintain safety and health in a work environment.

Anatomy and Physiology

This component examines the structure and function of the human body and the interrelationship between its systems.

Teamworking

Students will analyse the roles, responsibilities, characteristics and skills of team members, including leaders, coaches and trainers.

Psychology

This subject will equip learners through a range of theory which can be applied to their own lives and also to a social care setting. This unit introduces psychological perspectives and gives the learner an insight into understanding and interpreting interpersonal behaviour.

Emergency Department Care Skills

Students will be equipped with the knowledge, skill and competence to provide care and support within an Emergency Department under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Medical Terminology

This module will equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the range of medical terminology applicable and relevant specifically to a role in a medical practice, clinic or hospital context.

Occupational First Aid

Learner will gain the competence to provide and co-ordinate first aid in the workplace in compliance with the requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 and the associated Guide to these Regulations.

Word Processing

Learners will acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to use a word processing application to produce documents in a variety of contexts to a professional standard.

Work Experience

Students will examine work organisations and personal career opportunities in a particular vocational area, to include consideration of work related issues and needs.

Students may also be provided with an exercise class to ensure adequate fitness levels are both reached and maintained.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The State ambulance and fire services and private ambulance companies look for qualified staff to recruit. Opportunities also exist in other industries, e.g. Cork Airport and Port of Cork response teams, pharmaceutical and chemical companies in the Cork region, Oil Refinery, Whitegate, Local On-call Services and direct employment as Emergency Medical Technicians.

Fire Safety and Emergency Response training will enhance employment opportunities in the broader labour market where such skills would be an invaluable asset, e.g. Caretakers, Safety Officers, Duty Managers etc.
