Programme Overview

This programmer is an introduction to those who wish to progress on to paramedics, either in the

Fire or Ambulance Services. Learners who successfully complete this programmer will gain essential knowledge and skills in areas relevant to these careers. This programme will improve the chances of recruitment in either the Fire or Ambulance Service. This programme is also suitable for adults seeking qualifications to return to the workforce, as Nursing Studies, Level 5, is included in this programme.

  • Work Experience is a mandatory part of the programme. Learners are responsible for finding their own worl experience placement in a variety of healthcare/emergency acre settings/

  • Hazardous Chemicals
  • Emergency First Responder (EFR) incorporating Defibrillator Training - This is the PHECC standard for Emergency First Response and AED use.
  • Emergency Medical Technician - This is the PHECC standard for the National Qualification Emergency Medical Technician (NQEMT). 

Entry Requirements

  • Applicants must have Leaving Certificate, LCA or equivalent.
  • Holders of a QQI Level 4 Award are also eligible to apply.
  • Mature learners (over 23) may be exempt from the above academic requirements.
  • In addition applicants will have to undertake an interview.

Employment/Progression Opportunities

  • The programme design is vocational in nature:
  • Those who succeed in obtaining all the certification listed above will be eligible to apply for various positions in the Emergency Services.
  • Award holders are qualified to work as professional careers in social, health or community care environments.
  • Institutes of Technology and other Colleges around the country may be offering opportunities for further studies.

Limerick College of Further Education is a long-established, state-funded and administered further education college. It is one of many centres of education run by Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board. LCFE was known until 2008 as Limerick Senior College.

LCFE offers Further Education (Post Leaving Certificate) programmes and Professional qualifications in a variety of disciplines and caters for approximately 1200 full-time and 3000 part-time learners.
