Course details
Novice
This is a course in Modern Standard Arabic for learners with no prior exposure to Arabic. It emphasizes the development of their ability to read and write, with special focus on the mastery of pronunciation. It starts with a focus on the writing and sound production of the alphabet, moves on to writing words and progresses toward constructing simple, short sentences.
Elementary
Elementary Modern Standard Arabic courses are designed for learners with little exposure to Arabic and are offered in two levels. The aim of the first level is to provide extended practice to the development of writing words, mastery in pronunciation and the construction of simple structures for purposes of consolidation. The second elementary level provides practice for four skills to develop learners’ command of the language. While grammar is emphasized to enable the learners to develop the ability to form compound and complex sentence structures, vocabulary and expressions are substantially extended.
Intermediate
Intermediate-level Modern Standard Arabic courses consolidate the grammar learned in elementary Arabic, introduce new contextualized vocabulary and provide opportunities for extensive practice. The courses are designed to help students move from a beginner's proficiency level to intermediate levels. Advanced levels extend to include topics of general and professional interest.
Advanced
Advanced Modern Standard Arabic courses focus on fine-tuning learners’ four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) at the advanced level. Emphasis is placed on communicative proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic as well as the comprehension of authentic written material. The course also broadens learners’ vocabulary and helps students develop the ability to conduct structure analysis of language points in given texts.
