Imagine being able to easily and effortlessly melt away the excess weight whilst eating your favourite meals. Imagine reaching your ideal weight without pills, diet food, meal replacements or extreme exercise programs.
Imagine being able to fit into those beautiful, flattering clothes that you're too fat to fit into now. Wouldn't that feel amazing?
Just 5 years ago, I was 40lbs overweight. The weight gain was caused by an underactive thyroid and in the space of 3 years I gained 40lbs and couldn't lose it. In fact, the more I dieted the fatter I become. I looked around me and saw the same thing happening to everyone else who was dieting. Instead of losing weight and keeping it off, they were getting fatter and fatter with each successive diet. They lost weight for a while, went off the diet and regain it all with interest!
Strangely enough, the only thin people I saw were those who weren't dieting. Now you may think that these people didn't need to diet because they were thin. But have you ever thought that maybe the opposite could be true? That dieting starts an upward weight gain spiral. I started researching and investigating this and lo and behold, I found it to be true.
Trying to lose weight by dieting is like trying to put out a fire by pouring gasoline onto it!
Diets don't work for 3 main reasons. I discuss these reasons in greater depth in the course, but for now I'll just cover them briefly.
1. Diets switch on the "starvation response" and your body starts slowing your metabolism down in order to preserve energy. You see, your body is designed to ensure survival. When you diet, your body doesn't understand that you want to lose weight. It just knows that there is a shortage of food and so it hangs on to every bit of food it gets.
2. When you go on a very low calorie diet, your lose muscle, fat and water. Muscle is metabolically active tissue - that means that muscle burns calories. So the more muscle you lose, the slower your metabolism becomes. And as you know, a slow or sluggish metabolism = weight gain.
3. Dieting makes you feel psychologically deprived. Every time you say no to eating the foods you love, you build up internal pressure. In the modern food abundant environment we live in, this pressure builds very quickly. Eventually the pressure becomes too much to bear and you succumb. You eat that cookie or that BigMac or whatever it is that you were craving. Then you feel guilty and those guilt feelings often lead to a full-scale binge that can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days or even weeks! And because your body has been conditioned to store fat through dieting, you pack on the weight and end up fatter than ever.
When I realized this I started searching for a solution. I began observing naturally thin people - people who could eat whatever they wanted and never gain weight. At first, I chalked up the difference to metabolism - naturally thin people had a fast metabolism and overweight people had a slow metabolism.
But on closer observation, I began to see that there were some key differences between naturally thin people and those who gain weight by simply looking at something fattening. I questioned and observed hundreds of naturally thin people and began to notice that they had key traits and habits in common.
I began to act and think like these naturally thin people and the weight that I had struggled to lose for so long started to fall off. It was slow going and I must admit that more than once I was tempted to get back on a diet. But knowing that I would be sacrificing long term gain for a short term result I stuck with it. In 16 months I had lost all 40lbs. And best of all I did it without dieting. I never had to give up any of my favorite foods. In fact, I was enjoying my meals more than ever.
So what was different?
I wasn't eating to meet emotional needs anymore. I was eating only when I was physically hungry. I was paying attention to the flavours and textures as I was eating and so I needed to eat less in order to feel satisfied. For the first time ever I was listening to my body and working with it, rather than fighting against it.
When friends and family members saw my transformation, they wanted to know what I was doing. I shared what I had learned with them and watched them lose the weight easily and enjoyably.
Then I began sharing these strategies with my life coaching clients who wanted to lose weight and once again, I was amazed at how well they worked.
But I began to feel sad and angry. How many people were trapped in overweight, unhealthy bodies because they didn't know any better. They didn't know how easy and even enjoyable weight-loss can be once you start working with and listening to your body. That's why I created the Effortlessly Skinny Program. I want to share this much-needed information with anyone who needs it and who is willing to listen.
