Course details
We need to understand the principles that guide and the legislation that impacts on the planning and management of space. We also need to be able to professionally plan accommodation changes and ensure that we are optimising space utilisation.
Key principles and issues in effective management of space include the following:
- Key concepts of space planning and space Management.
- Space allocation guidelines or policies
- Measurement of space (gross, net, usable)
- Space planning tools (for example computer aided design (CAD) systems)
- Legislation for example Workplace
- Regulations and Disability Access
- Space management projects (for example
- briefs, block plans, layout plans, time-scale, enabling moves, churn)
- Interpretation of space layout drawings (for example furniture layouts, distances,
- corridors, fire-routes, building structures and
- building services, adjacencies)
- Attributes that have to be updated (for
- example name, department, location, assets)
- Ways of using space (for example storage,
- laboratory, library, meeting, collaboration,
- residential, retail, production, training)
- New ways of using space (for example
- sharing, home-working, “hotelling”, clubbing)
- Space occupancy and utilisation measures
- (for example hours of working, amount of space per person, head count)
- Space costs and measures (for example– cost per square foot or metre, overhead or cost-centre, cost per person)

Briefly explain the key concepts and principles of space planning and management State the relevant legislation that impacts on space management activities in own organisation
Optimisation of Space Utilisation
List examples of ways that space is used in own organisation and briefly explain how it could be better utilized Describe how to encourage responsible space occupancy
Entry:
The Institute of Leadership and Management ILM /City & Guilds operates an ‘Open Entry’ policy but prospective participants should be able to apply what they learn on the course in an organisational setting (need not be in a job).
Certification:
There are no examination with participants instead completing an assignment which is assessed. On successful completion of the assignments participants receive their Unit Certificate in Managing Space from the ILM.
Who are the ILM ?
The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) are the largest management certification body in the UK and certify over 90,000 courses each year in the UK and Ireland. ILM is part of City & Guilds and is approved in Ireland by the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland (NQAI).
