Effective and Engaging Classroom Presentations

Course details

On completion of this course, participants use appropriate educational focused techniques involved in creating an effective and engaging presentation. From the onset, they will use the impress software to create, edit, open and manipulate existing presentations for use in cross-curricular teaching. Part of the course will involve developing lesson plans using effective and engaging presentations as the delivery method across a wide range of subjects and will combine Interactive Whiteboard use with Impress to encourage whole class participation.

Course Modules

Module 1:

• Learn your way around the Impress interface
• Insert various objects and text into an Impress presentation slideshow.
• Gain the skills to arrange the sequence of slides in a slideshow
• Develop a lesson plan suitable for use in an English class
• Gather and analyse the evidence required for the self-evaluation of their teaching

Module 2:

• Know how slides can be formatted using text or bulleted/numbered lists
• Learn the skills to add background fills, colours, headers and footers
• Create a lesson plan using Impress for a Geography lesson
• Write a short document outline the weaknesses and strengths of your current teaching method

Module 3:

• Know how to insert a sound clip and run a video clip
• Add images and pictures from the web to a presentation
• Add hyperlinks to a presentation
• Develop a lesson plan using Impress for a History lesson
• Have written a short self-evaluation report

Module 4:

• Understand the benefits of using an Interactive Whiteboard with Impress in the classroom
• Use Custom Animations and Slide Transitions for presentation effects
• Learn the skills to upload an Impress presentation and make it available online
• Develop a lesson plan using Impress in Maths
• Devise a development plan to improve on the weaknesses identified

Module 5:

• Understand the importance of good presentation design and how it can be used in teaching
• Learn from ten best practice examples that use Impress in classroom
• Create a presentation on the story of Cinderella for use in the classroom
• Outline the implementation and monitoring plan that you will use during the next academic year to ensure you improve on your teaching

Assessment

Each module will require participants to contribute a post to the course forum in response to a question posed by the course facilitator. Each question will require critical thinking and stimulate discussion among the community of learners, all of which will be discussed using the moderated forum and will in turn develop a community of practice. During the course, participants will answer multiple-choice questions to encourage knowledge retention.

To complete the course, each participant must undertake a significant assignment based on all modules. This exercise will take the form of a reflective exercise, creation of a lesson plan and a presentation to be used in the following academic year, which will provides an opportunity for the participant to analyse:

• Their key learning points from the course
• The subject of the course in terms of their own experience
• Practical examples of how they will apply what they have learned in their classroom in the year ahead
