Ecological Risk Assessment for the Effects of Fishing Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research
Price: AED 3,897

    Course details

Provide participants with an overview on the theory of Ecological Risk Assessment for the Effects of Fishing (ERAEF), a new technique that assesses the risk to marine fish stocks and ecosystems of commercial and recreational fishing. The ERAEF technique allows prioritization of risks so that management responses can be proportional to the risks identified Provide participants with practical experience in undertaking an ERAEF using data from Kuwait. This practical experience will be provided through a structured and guided risk assessment based on the theory covered in the initial stages of the course

    Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

    • Understand the theoretical background of Ecological Risk Assessment and its application for assessing the risks of fishing to marine ecosystems and species
    • Assess the priority management intervention that is required to address species and ecosystems that are assessed as being of high risk to fishing activities
    • Use the skills acquired in the training course to undertake an ERAEF using their own data to assess the risks of fishing to marine ecosystems and species

    Participants

All participants will be expected to have at least a Bachelor’s Degree with a good knowledge of marine ecosystems or fisheries management in the northern Gulf region.

    Pre-requisites

Good knowledge of English Understanding of mathematics and/or statistics (to undergraduate level) At least two years’ experience in marine biology or marine management related to the northern Gulf area

About Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research

KISR is a pioneering, independent, national institute of scientific excellence. KISR’s initial role was dedicated to developing three fields of national importance: petroleum, desert agriculture, and marine biology. Since then, KISR’s role and responsibilities have expanded greatly to include the advancement of national industry and the undertaking of studies to address key challenges, such as the preservation of the environment, sustainable management of Kuwait’s natural resources, responsible management of water and energy, and development of innovative methods of agriculture.
