    Learning Outcomes

    Learners will be able to:

    • Compare a range of philosophical perspectives and approaches in relation to early childhood education
    • Describe the main features and influence of the main philosophical approaches in relation to ECCE practice
    • Prepare a detailed evaluation of a specific early childhood curricular approach using indicative criteria including:

    Process and content

    - Adult-directed, child initiated and child centred

    - Inclusivity, integration and intercultural

    - The hidden curriculum

    - The traditional approach versus process approach to curriculum implementation

    • Facilitate autonomous learning by each child in a specific ECCE setting
    • Provide learning opportunities involving creative and non- routine activities based on underpinning theoretical concepts and philosophical approaches
    • Promote awareness of alternative philosophical approaches and traditions in relation to early childhood education among peers and colleagues
    • Identify own learning needs at a personal and professional level and assist others in identifying learning needs
    • Perform tasks within the parameters of professional conduct including relations with parents or guardians, young children and colleagues

    Assessment:

    Assignment 30%, Skills Demonstration 40%, Examination (Theory) 30%

    Progression Routes:

    QQI awards at level 6 in Childcare or 3rd level degree courses in childcare
