Programme Overview
This programme will provide the practical skills and knowledge necessary to work with children i.e. to care for and encourage the young child to reach his/her potential in a nurturing environment. This programme offers an introduction to the Montessori approach in early year’s education.

- Work Experience is a mandatory component of the programme. Learners will be responsible for finding their own placement in a registered childcare setting 1 day per week.
Entry Requirements
- Applicants must have passed the Leaving Certificate or LCA. English and Maths would be an advantage (Foundation Maths is acceptable).
- Holders of a QQI/ Level 4 award are also eligible to apply.
- Mature learners (over 23) may be exempt from the above academic requirements.
Employment/Progression Opportunities
- Award holders are qualified to work in a variety of settings including Créches, Nurseries and Montessori Playgroups.
- Holders may progress to QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education at LCFE or other Colleges.
- Institutes of Technology and other Colleges around the country may be offering opportunities for further studies.

Limerick College of Further Education is a long-established, state-funded and administered further education college. It is one of many centres of education run by Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board. LCFE was known until 2008 as Limerick Senior College.
LCFE offers Further Education (Post Leaving Certificate) programmes and Professional qualifications in a variety of disciplines and caters for approximately 1200 full-time and 3000 part-time learners. Its campuses are situated in the South-East of the city on Mulgrave Street (a short distance from the city centre) and also in East Limerick at Cappamore.
