Course details

This course is a primer in directing. An introduction to all the main aspects of directing is combined with practical exercises in shooting to give an overview and experience of the basics – the practical knowledge you need in order to direct films. You will be guided through the process of preparation, taking in all the major departments that come together to make a film possible. In addition to practical exercises, all participants will shoot and crew short scenes.

Course Content:

During the course students will write and redraft a short scene. In week six, each student directs a small crew and cast, and shoots the scene on digital video using a Sony Z1.

  • Introduction to the role and responsibilities of the director
  • Introduction to crew roles
  • Overview of technology and workflow.
  • Script readings and dialogue analysis
  • Storyboarding
  • Translating the screenplay into visuals.
  • Development of visual style with D.o.P and art director
  • Understanding shot descriptions, framing and composition
  • Directing actors
  • Rehearsing and shooting
