This Diploma was developed in response to the continuing education needs of professionals in social and community settings in Ireland. In the context of professionalization of social care work, this course reflects the area of social care in Ireland from two perspectives.
- Psychological Aspect of Social Care
- Contemporary Social Care Practice in Ireland
The psychological component provides a solid introduction to developmental theories across the human lifespan including influences on childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age.
The practice component explores current social care practices, theoretical concepts and approaches in a variety of perse settings in Ireland.
The course is designed primarily to meet the needs of employees of the industry that have practical experience in statutory, voluntary and private service and settings including independent and residential services for individuals with disabilities, residential and aftercare services for children, homeless services, services for older people and community support services.
The aim of the Diploma is to educate reflective practitioners who can continue to learn and develop their professional knowledge, interpersonal skills and self awareness appropriate for careers in social care.

Lifespan Psychological Development (weeks 1-5):
- Psychology and its application to Social Care
- Childhood Development including Attachment Theory and Emotional Development
- Lifespan Learning and Development
- Adolescence and Early Adulthood
- Life Transitions in Adulthood
- Old Age and End of Life Care
Social Care Applications (weeks 6-10):
- Historical Context and Policy of Social Care in Ireland
- Childcare practices including Children’s First Guidelines
- Social Care Models and Service Provision
- Disability Studies
- Care of the Older Person
