Who should apply:

Gardaí above the rank of sergeant who wish to further their careers in police management. Those working generally in the criminal justice system in Ireland. Those in other careers who are interested in modern policing issues.

Course Summary:

Delivered by expert academics and practitioners in this field, the purpose of the Diploma in Police Leadership & Management is to equip learners with an understanding of this fascinating profession from a range of perspectives. During the course, students will develop a critical understanding of the concept, policies and practices of policing within the context of a multidisciplinary approach to policing studies. They will also gain a better understanding of the causes and consequence of crime and offer critical assessments of different approaches to crime reduction. They will also increase knowledge and understanding of their different approaches to management and leadership in policing organisations.

During this course the student will learn how to understand and evaluate best policing practices in an ever-changing criminal justice environment. They will study the psychology of criminal behaviour, examine trends and issues in policing, human diversity in justice including restorative justice models and the type of crime profiling that is required in modern police forces. Special categories of offenders will be examined concluding with a look at the key issues developing in modern police management.

  • Week 4 - Forensic Studies
  • Week 5 - Restorative Justice
  • Week 6 - Crime Analysis; Criminal profiling; Crime Prevention
  • Week 7 - Special Types of Offenders or Crimes - Youth crime & alcohol; sex offenders; homicide and terrorists; cybercrime
  • Week 8 - Key Issues in Policing - Decision Making, Police Accountability and Ethical Policing
  • Week 9 - Key Issues in Policing - People and Organisational Management
  • Week 10 - Key Issues in Policing - Leadership in Modern Policing

Assessment

A pass grade on the written assignment will be required for awarding of the Diploma in Police Leadership & Management. A fail grade will result in a Certificate of Attendance for the course but without the Diploma being awarded. Students must attend at least 8 of the 10 evenings to graduate with either the Diploma or Certificate of Attendance unless a serious and verifiable reason for further absence is provided. Similarly, the Project must be handed in on the due date unless a sound reason for lateness is provided. In such instances, an extension may be awarded at the discretion of the lecturer
