News is information that someone, somewhere, wants to suppress. The rest, said Dublin-born British newspaper magnate Lord Northcliffe, is “advertising”.
Modern journalism, however, is about so much more than just “news”. A century after Lord Northcliffe’s reign, the profession now embraces, not just the printed word, but also television, radio and digital media – and not just news, but specialist reporting on business, sport, the arts and many other subjects.
The City Colleges Diploma in News & Sport Journalism prepares the student to contribute to the global digital conversation in an eloquent, informative and effective style. Students will learn the key skills of in-depth research and clear, concise writing, vital for success in all walks of life. The course will prepare them to write for newspapers, magazines and the web – and also introduce them to the world of broadcasting and publishing.
Objective
Students who successfully complete the Diploma will have gained the skill set and knowledge to:
- Report on current affairs and sports events
- Research, collate and disseminate news and information
- Develop their own journalistic style
- Manipulate digital media for journalistic purposes
