    Treatments for the purposes of shampooing and conditioning the hair and scalp, colouring and lighten hair, perming and neutralise hair and cutting women’s hair.

    The main aim of the ITEC Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing is to enable candidates to gain the necessary practical and theoretical skills in order to provide Hairdressing services.

    Course Outline

    Unit 602 Shampoo and Condition the Hair and Scalp

    This unit aims at enabling the students to be able to prepare to shampoo and condition the hair and scalp, identify the condition of the hair and scalp, select and use products, tools and equipment suitable for client’s hair and scalp condition and providing of suitable aftercare advice.

    Unit 603 Cut Women’s Hair

    This unit aims at enabling the students to use suitable consultation techniques to identify service objectives, ability to assess the potential of the hair to achieve the desired look, select and use cutting equipment to achieve the desired look, cross check the haircut to ensure even balance and weight distribution and providing of suitable aftercare advice.

    Unit 315 The Art of Dressing Hair

    This unit prepares the student in the area of dressing hair which includes the methodologies of preparing the client and work area, the knowledge of effects of different styling techniques, the factors to be considered when styling and dressing hair. The unit also aims at enabling the students to select and use styling products, tools and equipment to achieve desired look, styling techniques and dressing effects and the effective control of hair during dressing.

    Unit 605 Colour and Lighten Hair

    This unit prepares the student in the area of coloring hair that includes assessing the potential of the hair to achieve the desired look, understanding the principles of colour selection and the international colour chart. This unit also enables the students to be able to select and use application method, products, tools and equipment to colour hair, application of colour, removal of colour product and creating a desired look to the satisfaction of the client.

    Unit 601 Client Consultation for Hair Services

    This unit aims at providing students the methodologies of communication with clients in a manner that creates confidence, trust and maintains good will, safe and hygienic working practices, effective communication, identification and recording of contraindications.

    Unit 600 Follow Health and Safety Practice in the Salon

    This unit aims at enabling the students in conducting themselves in the workplace, deal with hazards within their own area of responsibility, follow salon policy for security, using of personal protective equipment and maintaning security of belongings.

    Unit 611 Salon Reception Duties

    This unit prepares the students in the area of salon reception duties that includes dealing with a variety of enquiries, identify the nature of the enquiry, maintaining appropriate levels of reception stationary, procedures for taking messages for a variety of enquiries and the importance of dealing with enquiries. The unit also aims to prepare the students in dealing with confidential information to meet with salon and legal requirements, recording of client appointment details, calculate service costs accurately and dealing with problems that may occur with payments.

    Unit 630 Display Stock to Promote Sales in a Salon

    This unit aims at enabling the students to select materials, equipment and stock, assembling of display, labelling the displayed products clearly, accurately and in a manner consistent with legal requirements. The unit also provide students the methodologies on the maintenance needs of a promotional display, safety considerations when dismantling a display and the key legal requirements affecting the display and sale of goods.

    Unit 612 Working in the Hair Industry

    This unit aims to provide students the methodologies in understanding the occupational roles within the hair industry, the employment characteristics of working in the hair industry, the education and training opportunities within the hair industry and understand the basic employee rights and responsibilities.

    Unit 607 Perm and Neutralise Hair

    This unit aims to prepare students in the area of selection and use of products, tools and techniques, sectioning and winding of hair, monitoring the development of perming and neutralising processes. The unit also aims to provide students the knowledge of assessing potential of hair to achieve the desired look, suitable consultation techniques to identify service objectives, different consultation techniques and factors that determine the use of different types of perming and neutralising products, tools and equipment.

    Unit 908 Create an Image Based on a Theme within the Hair and Beauty Sector

    This unit aims to enable students to create a mood board based on a theme, outline the purpose of a mood board and to present the mood board to others. The unit also provides students the technical skills to create a theme based image, evaluate the effectiveness of the theme based image and evaluating the effectiveness of the creation of a theme based image.

    Unit 606 Provide Scalp Massage Services

    This unit aims to enable students to provide scalp massage services where the students would be able to prepare themselves, the client and work area, use suitable consultation techniques to identify service objectives and having the knowledge of the different factors that can affect the performance of scalp massage services. In this unit, the students would also be able to carry out scalp massage services where they would be able to communciate and behave in a professional manner, select and use products, tools and equipment and provide suitable aftercare advice.

    Unit 629 Working with Others in a Salon

    This unit aims to enable students to be able to work with clients and colleagues in a salon where the students would be able to assist others to resolve problems, identify the effects of negative attitude and behaviour on others and identify roles and responsibilities of team members in a salon.

    Certificate Conferring Body

    Upon completion of the course, students will be awarded the Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing by International Therapy Examination Council (ITEC).

    Entry Requirements

    It is recommended that Candidates hold at least 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C or equivalent are recommended, but this is not essential. This is at the discretion of MDI and adult returners’ experience will be considered.

    Other than the mentioned pre-requisites, the students should also have the following:

    • Students must be able to read and write in English or Chinese. Other cases will be considered on a case-to-case basis.
    • Students should be of a minimum of 16 years of age to be eligible for the courses.
    • For foreign students, relevant passes are required.

    Students who do not meet the minimum entry requirement will be required to undergo an entrance test at MDI.

    Graduation Requirement

    Students are required to meet the following criteria in order to graduate and obtain their relevant certificates:

    • Candidates must complete all modules with at least 75% (90% for International students) in attendance for each module to qualify for a full diploma.
    • Evidence of treatments is graded as either a Pass or Fail.
    • If a candidate is unsuccessful in any area, they will be expected to re-sit only the unit where they have not achieved a pass grade, to which they will be referred. Referrals should be completed within one year of the original examination provided that re-sits are attempted at least once every three months.

    Examination

    At the end of the course, you can register to sit for ITEC Examination. Upon passing both the practical and theory examinations, you will receive ITEC Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing by ITEC.

    Manner of Assessment

    Awards will be awarded by ITEC based on the student results.
