Course details
This course, which has been awarded NMBI category 1 approval, is open to health and social care professionals and reflects service user safety as a concern across complex, fast moving and pressurised environments in health and social care practice (World Health Organisation 2011). Collectively, the two modules within this minor award critically explore contemporary interprofessional working and communication as they impact on service user safety and quality service. Specific topics include professional accountability; legal, professional and ethical aspects of the management of adverse events; promoting quality services by risk management; open disclosure policies; protecting and promoting rights of groups with specific needs; whistle blower protection and national regulation for safer quality assured health and social care.
Why study this programme?
This course reflects service need to implement the service user safety agenda across the health and social care arena. It will raise awareness of on-going challenges of interprofessional working and developments to provide safe and quality services in accordance with Building a Culture of Patient Safety 2008. The World Health Organisation has acknowledged that the education and training of healthcare professionals has “been under-used and under-valued as a vital tool for addressing the challenges of achieving improved patient safety” and this course would reflect the World Health Organisation Patient Safety Curriculum Guide to provide a growing awareness and recognition of service user safety in health and social care.

- Applicants must have QQI Level 8 qualification in health or social care, or equivalent.
