Course details

This full-time course offers learners an opportunity to pursue a career in dance, theatre and entertainment, covering a wide range of dance subjects. Learners are supported and encouraged throughout the course to develop their individual artistic talents through dance classes, choreography, drama and musical theatre.

The focus is on building a comprehensive knowledge of technique and performance skills, encouraging the learner to work to a higher level and increase their opportunities to progress as a professional dancer.

Learners who successfully complete a QQI Level 5 Certificate may be able to use their results to progress to related Level 7 and Level 8 Degree Programmes. Former learners have progressed to Irish and international universities. In Ireland this includes the B.A. (Hons) in Irish Music and Dance and the B.A. (Hons) in Voice and Dance in the University of Limerick. Third level progression opportunities for QQI learners are continually being developed and enhanced.

Course Features

  • Learners will showcase their achievements in the end of year show at the Pavilion Theatre, Dún Laoghaire
  • Attendance at performances of dance and theatre and partake in workshops and master classes in drama and performance

Course Content:

CLASSICAL BALLET

  • Use of turnout, postural alignment, step analysis, muscle strength and flexibility. Movement dynamics, performance and projection skills.

JAZZ

  • Fundamentals of Jazz Dance technique and style through warm-up and choreographed dances.

CONTEMPORARY

  • The principles of alignment, the use of weight and momentum, torso articulation, floor work and coordination.

GENERAL

  • Choreography, Ballet Repertoire, Step Analysis, Musical Theatre, Music Performance, Body Conditioning, Kinesiology, Word Processing, Communications and Work Experience.

Entry Requirements

  • Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent. LCA is also acceptable
  • Learners should have a high degree of motivation and a passionate interest in dance, with some previous experience or training
  • Entry to the course is by audition and interview
  • Mature applicants welcome
  • Applicants may be accepted without meeting formal entry requirements

We_They (SCFE) has been included on a national panel of trainers approved to offer childcare training under the newly launched “Learner Fund”. The training will be offered as part of our Adult Education provision, with support from the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Childcare Committee.
