Course details

Introduction

This course is aimed at individual who wish to pursue a career in youth and community work. The course provides learners with knowledge and understanding of the context of youth work, the role of a youth worker and the practical skills required to work effectively with young people in the field of youth work. Learners must have an interest in community based youth work and will be required to work with a youth group during the course.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate with 5 passes or Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent. For mature students applications may be considered based on a proven interest/ voluntary experience in youthwork. Entry may be subject to interview and depends on satisfactory completion of an induction programme and Garda Vetting.

Course Structure

The course focuses on the personal and social issues that impact on young people and their communities such as social exclusion, poverty, unemployment, substance abuse. Work experience within a range of youth work settings forms an integral part of the course.

Career Options | Progression

Holders of a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Youthwork may enter employment in youth services or community development settings. You may also progress to further study at Institutes of Technology/Universities through the Higher Education Links Scheme.
