Course details

Advances in computers and network technology continue to provide job opportunities for IT technicians skilled in the installation, repair and maintenance of computer systems. Individuals who can provide an efficient level of IT support to end users, while demonstrating an ability to counter the threat of viruses, malware and phishing attacks remain in very high demand.

The course is designed to provide the learner with a solid foundation in the fundamentals of computer systems, hardware and software maintenance, networking, virtualisation and mobile technologies. The learner will acquire the skills to design, deploy and secure client/server computer networks based on wired and wireless technologies. A key feature of this course is the use of diagnostics, simulation and forensics in developing the learner's problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

AWARD

  • QQI Level 5
  • Certificate in 'Computer Systems and Networks'
  • 5M0536

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates seeking entry to this programme would ideally have a minimum of a pass in Mathematics at Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate. Some experience with computers and operating systems is desirable but NOT a requirement. All prospective students MUST demonstrate an active interest in working with computer technologies.

COURSE CONTENT

A number of subject areas will be covered, including some or all of the following topics:

Computer Systems Hardware

Designed to provide the learner with the physical skills and knowledge to build and maintain modern computer systems. Special emphasis is placed on developing the learner's troubleshooting skills in effecting hardware diagnostics and repairs.

Network Essentials

Provides the learner with a solid foundation in computer networks. Special emphasis is placed on core network principles for both peer and server/client networks. Learners can expect to devlop skills in building, securing and deploying various network systems using a variety of hardware, peripherals and software initiated solutions.

Operating Systems

Covers the fundamental concepts of operating systems, software installation and system upgrades. Learner's will acquire skills in installing, securing and maintaining a variety of popular operating systems. Also includes a primer in first-line preventitive maintenance and software forensics.

Programming and Design Principles

Provides the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence needed to design, code and test structured computer programs using an Integrated Development Environment (IDE).

Maths for STEM

Provides the learner with the problem solving skills required to master selected mathematical concepts and theorems. Topics include basic mathematical modelling, graphs/functions, logic, elementary calculus, statistics and probability theory.

Mobile Technologies

Provides the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to configure, utilise and maintain mobile technologies and associated devices. Includes app development for mainstream platforms.

Virtualisation Support

Introduction to virtualisation, hypervisors, host/guest systems and simulated networks. The component is designed to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to participate in the implementation and maintenance of a virtualised network infrastructure.

Teamworking

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to work as an effective member of a team, operating independently while under general direction and within a range of perse, team-oriented environments.

Work Experience

All students are expected to participate in mandatory work placement in a relevant industrial or commercial environment.
