Course details

Students will acquire up-to-date knowledge in the field Computer Science and Software Engineering. Students will gain skills in programming and problem solving. These skills will be developed over one year and allow the candidates to become proficient in many key practical areas of Software Development. The languages that the student will experience is primarily C# using Microsoft's .NET framework, but will also experience C++ and Java through out the course.

Students will be trained in everything from:

  • Software architecture and design with UML class diagrams, 
  • Algorithms and data structures within console applications, 
  • Database creation and SQL queries,
  • Internet and network programming,
  • Object Orientated Programming incorporating classes and libraries, 
  • Graphical User Interface programs,
  • 2D and 3D computer game design and development,
  • Web Development, using HTML5 and CS3,
  • Multi threading program development,
  • Mathematics.

Students will complete a wide range of assignments incorporating all of the above aspects that will enable the students to excel in both industry and further education. The Mathematics module is related to Computer Science and will be an advantage to any student entering either industry or third level education. 

Entry requirements:

Students will be expected to have passed at least 5 ordinary Leaving Certificate subjects with a C3 grade or higher in Mathematics and a D3 grade or higher in English; or Leaving Certificate Applied Examinations (Distinction Level) or equivalent. In special cases Students may be accepted.

Career and Further Education Prospects:

Students will be able to directly enter the work force and industry, past students have gone directly in roles such as: start up company software developer, database administrator to IT administrator.

Students can further their education with progression into a third level course, for example, Level 8 Computer Science courses, and in some cases can enter directly into second year of the third level course. Certification:

Successful completion of the course will lead to a FETAC Level 6 - Software Development Certificate.
