Community Development FETAC Level 6

Course details

This is an advanced course for those who which to specialise in the area of Community Development. The course is also suitable for those who wish to undertake advanced study in the area of social studies. Applications are welcome from holders of a FETAC Level 5 Award in any of the following areas: Youth Studies, Social Studies, Social Care and Community Care.

Community work or community development involves an analysis of social and economic situations and collective action for change based on that analysis. It is centered on a series of principles that seek to go beyond consultation to participation and beyond capacity building to consciousness raising and empowerment. It recognizes the changing and often hidden nature of the structural inequalities based on race, class, gender and disability to name but a few. It seeks to be transformative rather than conforming and empowering rather than controlling.

Work Experience two days each week. Participants should:

• be able to reflect on own experience of community development
• be prepared for the academic challenge of the course
• be prepared to work co-operatively as part of a team

This course is open to students who have achieved:

• At least FOUR Merits in a related FETAC Level 5 Award OR
• A full Award at FETAC Level 5 in a related area
