Course details

The Community Care assistant course equips students with the skills and knowledge to care for clients in a safe and hygienic environment. You will learn about the roles and responsibilities of the Care Worker and acquire practical skills for work in the caring environments. You will gain an understanding of the nursing process, appreciate the models of care and develop an awareness of nursing ethics and etiquette in care situations. In addition, you will be afforded the opportunity to further your personal development and enhance your communication skills.

Course Subjects

  • Care Provision and Practice (mandatory)
  • Human Growth and Development (mandatory)
  • Work Experience (mandatory)
  • Communications (mandatory)
  • Safety & Health at Work (mandatory)

Three subjects are also studied from the below list:

  • Infection Prevention and Control
  • Care of the Older Person
  • Occupational First Aid & CPR

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent standard of education.

Relevant Work Experience coupled with life experience.

All entry is subject to interview.

Satisfactory Garda clearance application.

Work Experience

Work experience placement is an integral part of this course. Candidates gain first-hand experience by attending appropriate and related work placements within the community care environment. Garda clearance is essential to partake in work experience which comprises a minimum of 10 days placement.

Certification

  • FETAC Level 5 Community Care (DCHCC)
  • Manual Handling of Patients Certificate
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • FETAC Level 5 Occupational First Aid Certificate (optional)

Progression/Career Opportunities

Learners, who have successfully completed the Community Care course, are eligible to apply for employment as a carer within the community health services. Alternatively, the full FETAC Level 5 award facilitates entry, on a competitive basis, to a range of third level institutions to study social care/studies.
