Course details

The CCE methodology premises from the understanding that different communities have different challenges and through dialogues the programme seeks to enhance the communities' capacity to identify and provide solutions to their challenges.

PROGRAMME RATIONALE

The HIV and AIDS is the epidemic, and South Africa has the highest infection number of HIV-infected citizens (4.9 to 6.6 Million, according to UNAIDS 2008). The prevalence rate is at over 18% among adult South Africans. Young women are affected disproportionately highly, in the age group 20 – 24 they are at four times the normal risk. And 1.3% of the population is newly infected every year, and corresponds to about 631 000 people.

Hence with the approach of community-based dialogue measures play a particular important role to mitigate the effects of the pandemic.

OBJECTIVES

• To build an HIV and AIDS competent communities through the creation of interactive spaces within communities to generate response to HIV and AIDS.
• To Integrate individual and collective concerns, values and beliefs, and to shift individual and collective attitudes and behaviours embedded in social systems and structures.
• To build up of appropriate transformative leadership abilities to facilitate community change in HIV and AIDS.
• To implement community dialogues to generate deep understanding of the complex nature of HIV & AIDS within individuals and communities.
