    Overview

    This programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence relevant to the theory and practice of child development when working autonomously and with others in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) settings.

    Requirements

    The requirements for entry to the Special Needs Assisting Level 6 Minor Award are, Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent qualifications or FETAC/QQI Level 4 Certificate and/or relevant life and work experiences.

    Course

    The following content will be covered in this course:

    • Critically reflect on child development theories and their application on ECCE practice
    • Explore the effects of a range of genetic, social, cultural and environmental factors on the holistic development of the child
    • Research a range of theoretical perspectives in the field of behaviour management in support of the holistic development of the child
    • Select from a range of specialised skills to meet the needs of parents, children, colleagues and other stakeholders in an ECCE setting in the context of legislation and national practice guidelines
    • Organise a variety of detailed observations in support of programme planning for individual and groups of children using a range of tools
    • Evaluate personal and team practice in meeting child development needs in an ECCE setting
    • Identify personal learning goals and assist others in identifying learning and personal development goals.

    Assessment

    The assessment process includes a combination of module appropriate assessment procedures which will facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes of this course. These methods will include continuous assessment processes such as:

    Assessment Format: Project 60% / Examination 40%

    Project - A project is usually carried out over an extended period of time. Projects may involve research, require investigation of a topic, issue or problem or may involve process such as a design task, a performance or practical activity or production of an artefact or event.

    Examination -A supervised exam will take place at a time to be confirmed by the tutor. This will be a supervised exam after the completion of the module. This which will assess the learners ability to recall, apply theory and show an understanding of the different concepts drawn from the module.

    Progression

    On successful completion of this Childcare Social Legal and Health Studies course, the participant will have achieved one of eight modules which lead to a Major Award in Early Childhood Care & Education Level 6
