Course details

The course consists of two Certificates, the Certificate in Medical Device Technology (30 Credits - Level 6) and the Certificate in Quality/ Excellence Ireland Diploma in Quality (20 Credits - Level 7). It also includes exams/ assessment which leads to three highly valued professional qualifications:
- Diploma in Quality Management, issued by Excellence Ireland.
- Internal Auditor Training Certificate, issued by International Register of Certified Auditors (IRCA)
- Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certificate, issued by an ASQ-accredited Black Belt Practitioner.

GMIT is the largest provider of Springboard/ ICTSkills courses in the West of Ireland, with 290 approved places across 12 courses in 2015. In 2013 some 20 places were approved for the Certificate in Medical Device Technology - in English course and a year later 18 of the people on that course were in employment. Similar results are expected for the people who commenced the course in 2014. The 2015 course has been expanded to include the highly valued Diploma in Quality Management (issued by Excellence Ireland), the Internal Auditor Training Certificate (issued by International Register of Certified Auditors (IRCA)) and a Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certificate, issued by an ASQ-accredited Black Belt Practitioner.

Programme Modules

The course consists of two Certificates, the Certificate in Medical Device Technology (30 Credits - Level 6) and the Certificate in Quality/ Excellence Ireland Diploma in Quality (20 Credits - Level 7). It also includes exams/ assessment which leads to three highly valued professional qualifications:

The cost of one sitting of each of these professional association exams/ assessments is allowed for on this course.

The Certificate in Medical Device Technology will consists of twelve (12) weeks of lectures over two days each week, followed by a full-time work placement/ industrial project. Modules undertaken are: Learning & Innovation Skills (Level 6 - 5 credits); Medical Device Technology (Level 6 - 10 credits); Current Industrial Concepts (Level 6 - 5 credits); Work Placement (Level 6 - 10 credits).

The Certificate in Quality Management consists of two evenings a week for 24 weeks. Modules undertaken are: Quality Management 1 (Level 7 - 10 credits); Quality Management 2 (Level 7 - 10 credits).

To properly prepare students for transitioning to employment, you will also undertake the accredited module "Transitioning to Work" (5 Credits - Level 7).

The most likely role will be as Quality Technician in a Medical Device company.
