Mobile Technologies with a special focus on Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most rapidly changing and in demand areas of software development today – which makes it a tremendously exciting area in which to study or work. IoT technology and application market is attracting heavy investment from Governments, IT industry and the Scientific Community. The key players in this market are Alcatel-Lucent, AT&T, IBM, Google, CISCO, Qualcomm, Intel and NXP Huawei.

About this Course

The Certificate in Internet of Things gives learners an appropriate in-depth practical-based learning experience regarding the latest IoT technologies and application developement. The course enables learners to acquire outstanding application development skills in the Internet of Things area through analysis, investigation, requirements elicitation, problem solving, and team work. Through its innovative teaching and learning strategies, the course develops an in-depth knowledge and skills in the core topics of Internet of Things including technologies for Internet of Things, software development with applicability in the Internet of Things domain and data mining and visualization. Programming Languages: Java, Python, C++.

The career development module “Career Bridge” will encourage learners to take responsibility and ownership for the development of their own career strategy and will tutor them in devising career development, networking, job search and interview strategies. Learners will work collaboratively with their Work Placement Advisor to source an appropriate 3-6 month work placement.

Award and Progression

The Certificate in Internet of Things is awarded by QQI at Level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications.

This course will allow learners to progress to level 9 programmes on the National Qualification Framework (NQF).

Academic Entry Requirements

A level 8 degree (2.2 award) or its equivalent in computer science or a cognate discipline.

The college operates a Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) scheme - meaning applicants who do not meet the normal academic entry requirements, may be considered based on relevant work or other experience. Non English speaking applicants must demonstrate fluency in the English language.

Course Assessment

The course will be assessed with a blend of project work and exams. This varies between modules but typically assessment is 50% continuous assessment and 50% exam. Please note that in some instances exams may take place in the daytime.
