Course Aims and Opportunities

  • This course aims to provide students with a sound introduction to working as a portrait photographer and the creative and technical skills required for the role.
  • Participants will learn camera skills and photo editing technology and how to work within a studio environment or on location and manage the issues arising in both.
  • Of interest to anyone wishing to pursue a career in photography, media, design, creative arts, marketing, digital technology, etc.
  • Successful candidates can go on to study other creative, technology or business-related modules and progress to further qualifications.

Course Outline

  • To provide a sound introduction to working as a portrait photographer within a studio environment or on location: Students will:
  • The use of camera controls and accessories to interpret portraits.
  • Various lighting conditions, daylight, domestic, commercial and flashlight.
  • Show how camera angle, lighting quality and facial expressions affect mood and interpretation.
  • Assemble a portfolio of work suitable for presentation at interview.
  • Research and evaluate assignments.
  • Use darkroom and digital manipulation techniques.
  • Demonstrate a variety of presentation methods.
  • Understand health and safety issues.
  • Show good time management in completing portrait assignments.
