Certificate in Photographic Studies

Course details

The course is aimed at students with a particular interest in photography. It will cover theory and practical training in all aspects of photography, resulting in the assembling of a portfolio which will facilitate entry to a third level course or to employment in photography. This course would also be of benefit to students who ultimately wish to pursue a career in another area such as architecture or real estate where photographic skills would be a definite asset.

Work Experience:

Throughout the year students go out on a variety of photographic assignments. An exhibition of this work is organised each year in May. This provides the opportunity for students to show work carried out over the year which would not otherwise be seen apart from by teachers and assessors. This exhibition is organised, set up, advertised and hosted by the students themselves.

Entry Requirements:

This course is aimed at students who have completed the Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied, Leaving Certificate Vocational and mature students with an interest in photography with suitable candidates being invited to a short interview at which they will present some samples of their work.

Certification:

This is a one year certificate course. Successful students receive a FETAC (Further Educationand Training Awards Council) Level 5 award in Photography (EPXXX). There is a system of continuous assessment throughout the year.

Career Progression:

The two main career options for students attending this course is to achieve a place in a third level college or to obtain employment in the field of photography. Students assemble a photographic portfolio of sufficient quality, variety and quantity to help them achieve a place in a third level college or to introduce themselves to a prospective employer.
