Course details
This hugely popular Diploma is useful in providing the basic foundation of legal knowledge relevant to working individuals and fresh graduates regardless of whichever field they hail from. The Certificate in Higher Education (Common Law), equivalent to the first year (Intermediate Stage of the Bachelor of Laws, LL.B programme, is awarded by the University of London International programmes upon successful completion of the final examinations held annually on May/June. Holders of this Diploma can proceed directly to the second year (known as Final Part I) of the Bachelor of Laws, LL.B programme.
The Certificate in Higher Education (Common Law) is also today increasingly used as an alternative ( to the A levels) entry qualification to the Bachelor of Laws programme in many universities in the United Kingdom.
Whou should take this course?
- Individuals who wish to practice as Lawyers, other than in Singapore (by continuing their studies to complete the LL.B. degree);
- Court clerks, police officers, legal secretaries who require additional knowledge or qualifications for purposes of career advancements;
- Individuals with a personal or professional interest in legal and contractual matters; or who have a specific interest such as those in arbitration, human resource and the insurance industry;
- Individuals motivated by an intellectual interest in law and legal issues, including those interested in pursuing higher degrees in law or other academic areas;
Students intending to practice as lawyers in Singapore who may use the Certificate in Higher Education (Common Law) to proceed to UK universities as full-time students
Course Outline
The programme is conducted over a 6-12 months duration, excluding the intensive revision course and subject to intake commencement. It can be studied either full-time or part-time and consists of four compulsory subjects: Common Law Reasoning & Institutions, Elements of the Law of Contract, Criminal Law and Public Law, leading to examinations held in May/June every year. Students may also opt to do two subjects each year over a period of two years.
How will I be assessed?
The Certificate in Higher Education (Common Law) is examined either in whole (1 examination sitting for 4 subjects) or in stages (2 examination sittings for 2 subjects at each sitting).
Entry Requirements
The student must be 18 years and above and demonstrate maturity to cope with the course. Whilst there is no minimum academic requirement, the University of London has appointed and given ITC-School of Laws the discretion to accept students into the programme based on certain guidelines, the general condition being that the student must show his or her ability to study at this level and to attend classes at ITC
The student should possess at the very least 3 ‘O’ levels to enter into the Diploma in Law programme failing which a test will be administered by ITC School of Laws.
