Course details
The Certificate in General Studies consists of a range of modules within the Humanities area including subjects such as English Literature, Philosophy, Archaeology, Maths, Information Technology and many others. This certificate programme introduces students to and gives a good foundation in a number of subject areas that students may wish to study at a later date. The programme gives some credits to students who subsequently enrol on the part-time BA Degree.
Who is this course intended for?
The course is suitable for those who have an interest in the Humanities or for students who are considering a more substantial programme of study such as a Bachelor of Arts, but are uncertain as to what subject area they wish to pursue.

Entry Requirements
There are no specific entry requirements for the Certificate in General Studies. Candidates who are 21 years or over on or before January 1st of year of entry may gain entry to the programme on the basis of mature years. Candidates under 21 years should meet the minimum matriculation requirements as outlined in the Frequently Asked Questions section.
Course Outline
Each module offered represents 5 credits. Students must take three modules in total from the modules available to make up 15 credits to qualify for the Certificate in General Studies. Students may select from the following broad subject areas:
- Exploring English Literature – An Introduction
- Life Skills for Success
- Philosophy – Ethics, Education, Modern Philosophy
- Archaeology
- Information Technology
- Maths
- Introduction to French, Italian, Spanish
The choice of modules on offer varies with each offering of the programme. Students should consult with the programme coordinator for a detailed list of these modules on offer in the current academic year.
Requirements And Assessment
Modules are assessed by a combination of written assignments and by examination during or at the end of each semester. Modules are taught from Monday evening to Thursday evening, from 6.30pm – 9.30pm. A module is taught in either Semester 1 or Semester 2. The exact day and time of classes depends on the modules chosen. Students who wish to pursue the Certificate award must register for one or two modules each semester to accumulate 15 credits on completion of their studies.
