Aim

Health & Fitness Instructors who hold the CEHF qualification are educated and trained to provide instruction in exercise to music, step aerobics, circuit and resistance training. Equally important is their ability to assess fitness levels and to plan safe, effective and enjoyable exercise programmes for individuals or groups of all abilities. CEHF qualified instructors make a positive contribution to health and well being by encouraging and motivating adults of all ages to pursue physically active lifestyles, to eat healthy food and to manage stress effectively.

Course Details

The programme can be undertaken (depending on the location) as a part-time day course (e.g Tues/theyd) or part-time week end course (Fri eve, Sat) and this changes on a semester/annual basis. Certificates are awarded by the University of Limerick to candidates who have successfully completed an intensive programme of practical and theoretical studies.

  • Applied Exercise & Fitness Instruction 3 (Circuit Training and Body Conditioning)
  • Applied Exercise & Fitness Instruction 4 (Step Training & Flexibility)
  • Exercise & Fitness Applications (Final written and practical examinations)

Continuous Assessment

All modules are examined on a continuous basis and may include both theoretical and practical elements of assessment. Candidates must successfully complete Modules 1-9 in order to take Module 10. The programme includes a research project and a work experience element.

Programme Tutors

All Tutors hold qualifications in the area of Exercise & Health Fitness or related area. Many of these tutors are teaching and/or conducting research in the areas of Education, Physical Education, Sport & Exercise Science and Recreation Management.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants should hold the Irish Leaving Certificate with minimum Grade D3 in five Ordinary Level subjects (including Maths, Irish or another language, and English) OR an approved equivalent qualification. Other standards within Leaving Certificate or other levels of education will be considered under the NCEF/UL Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) scheme*
  • All qualification documentation must be submitted in the English language.
  • Non EU Nationals must submit a Study Visa, copies of passport documentation and proof of employment for the last 5 years (Please note originals may be requested)
  • Applicants should have a commitment to encouraging others to take part in healthy activity, a desire to become a safe and competent instructor and have a confident, enthusiastic and adaptable personality.
  • Experience of participation in a fitness activity or a particular sport is important whilst good rhythm and co-ordination is also desirable.
  • Applicants should have good communication skills and enjoy working with people.
  • Selection for the programme will be based on the Application Form.
  • NCEF reserves the right to interview if required.

*Note: All applicants will be required to complete a detailed Portfolio of Learning. This document is available from NCEF Head Office, or can be downloaded here. Please note an RPL fee applies and on successful acceptance the fee is deducted from the overall programme fee.

Application Procedure

  • Apply by filling in the on-line form or
  • download the printer friendly version here.
  • A copy of the official Leaving Certificate Results or equivalent is required. You will be asked to attach any relevant documentation on the online form. If you are posting please ensure to include copies of the relevant documentation.
  • All qualification documentation must be submitted in the English language. Please ensure all translations to English are carried out by an official translator and accompanied by official transcripts.
  • For applicants that do not hold a leaving certificate or equivalent, you will need to apply through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – for information please read the information on the RPL tab. A cost of €125 applies to all Portfolio of Learning applicants however if successful this fee is then deducted from the cost of overall programme fees.
  • Please submit RPL fee with initial application
  • If you fulfil all the criteria and are successful an acceptance pack will be posted to you.
  • The completed acceptance forms and required documentation and deposit are returned to head office by the deadline date given in the acceptance pack.
  • The running of the course is subject to sufficient student numbers.
  • Please note that once accepted onto the programme all correspondence will be sent via email so it is vital to ensure you have a valid current email address and that this address is clearly stated on your application form.

About National Council for Exercise & Fitness

The National Council for Exercise & Fitness (NCEF) provides and facilitates comprehensive education and training for Exercise and Health Fitness Professional Instructors in Ireland

The NCEF was initially established in 1987 by the Physical Education Association of Ireland (PEAI) in association with Thomond College of Education (now integrated into the University of Limerick). The initiation of the scheme was also supported by the Sports Section, Department of Education at that time. The NCEF is an academic affiliate of the University of Limerick.

The NCEF is a registered company limited by guarantee. It operates on a not-for-profit basis and is guided by a Board of Trustees. Board members consist of representation from PEAI, UL, business, education, employer and leisure industry backgrounds.
