Course details
To give students a wide range of experience within the engineering sectors and to prepare stu- dents for entry into third level education, apprenticeship and the world of work.
Work Experience:
Students will spend two weeks working in industry. They will gain invaluable first hand experience in an industrial environment. Work experience will also provide them with more clearly defined career path and options.
Entry Requirements:
This course is aimed at students who have completed the Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied, Leaving Certificate Vocational and mature students with an interest in engineering with suitable candidates being selected by interview.
Certification:
There is continuous assessment throughout the year and examinations are taken in the mains ubjects in May. Successful candidates receive the FETAC (Further Education and Training AwardsCouncil) Level 5 Certificate in Engineering Technology (5M2061). Students may have the opportunity to repeat one or two subjects in the Leaving Certificate.
Career Progression:
Students who participate in this course are eligible to apply for apprenticeships or go directly into the workforce. Those students who successfully complete the course can gain entry to third level education by an alternative route known as the Higher Education Links Scheme, whereby students can gain entry to specific courses in the Institute of Technology, using their FETAC examination results instead of their Leaving Certificate results.
