Course details

MIT has developed this course with Design Network West to enable aspiring creative entrepreneurs to develop their ideas into new businesses. Students will have experience or a qualification in the creative area. On the course they will interact with a selection of project hosts, practitioners, industry leaders and entrepreneurs and learn from them. Delivery of the course will be led by the Centre for Creative Arts and Media and supported by staff from other departments and schools, including the school of Business. Mentors from the Innovation in Business Centre at GMIT will also be involved in the course.

GMIT is the largest provider of Springboard/ ICTSkills courses in the West of Ireland, with 290 approved places across 12 courses in 2015. Of the 70 Springboard / ICT Skills places that were approved for GMIT in 2013, a year later 70 people had completed internship and over 60 people were in paid employment. Similar results are expected for this course.

Programme Modules

The practical application of learning is embedded in the course through regular real-life project challenges and the incorporation of industry and practitioner guest speakers and contributors into the course. Participation in team projects will ensure students are exposed to alternative knowledge, skills sets and perspectives. This broadens participants' horizons and stimulates the cross-fertilisation of ideas and capabilities.

Throughout the course students will be encouraged and supported to develop entrepreneurial and self-employment opportunities as a viable alternative to employment. There is a requirement to develop one idea into a full business plan. The course provides a range of new venture skills including project management, marketing and digital media skills required for a modern creative business. Students will have support including mentors, advice potential sources of funding and access to incubation centres.
