Course details

The Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (IOG) have developed a competency based Certificate in Basic Ultrasound for Obstetrics & Gynaecology. This programme combines both theoretical and practical learning focusing on clinical experiential learning and has been designed to be flexible and suit heavy clinical workloads. It consists of:

Online Modules and Assessments - Online modules are delivered through RCPI’s online learning platform, Moodle. The modules include features such as video clips, interactive exercises, detailed diagrams, and links to other relevant information. Each module includes a short assessment. The topics covered are:
•Basic Physics of Diagnostic Ultrasound
•Early Pregnancy Assessment
•Basic Biometry Scan
•Biophysical Profile Score
•Ultrasound of the Adnexa (not mandatory but highly recommended)

Objective Structured Assessments for Technical Skills (OSATS) – There are corresponding OSATS that are required to be completed for each module. These should be completed in the workplace and signed by an Ultrasound Trainer.

Ultrasound Cases – Some modules require a minimum number of ultrasound cases to be logged after successful completion of the corresponding OSATS.

It is essential that aall participants identify an Ultrasound Trainer within their current workplace in order to complete OSATS. Ultrasound Trainers should be experienced in ultrasound and may be an Ultrasonographer, Consultant or Senior SpR. Ultrasound Trainers are required to successfully complete the required OSATS on site with participants and sign off competency of the skill(s) being assessed.
