What is this course about?
This course offers the student a sound understanding of the main principles and rules of the law of torts in Ireland. The course allows the student develop analytical and problem solving skills which will enable him/her to apply tort law to case studies and scenarios.
This course is an ECTS 15 credit module of the Law Degree.
On completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Discuss the nature, development and functions of tort law;
- Understand the theory and application of the fundamental concept of negligence and the specifi c applications of negligence within the law of tort;
- Demonstrate a thorough comprehension of the tort of trespass and nuisance;
- Demonstrate a thorough comprehension of the defences to and remedies for a tort action;
- Discuss the law of defamation and analyse the case for reform of the law in that area;
- Demonstrate a familiarity with relevant case law and legislation.
What are the minimum entry requirements?
All applicants will be considered on a case-bycase basis. Lifelong Learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the programme.
