What is this course about?

The aim of this module is to ensure students are fully informed of the requirements in the EPA code of practice and to be capable of implementing these requirements in the field. They will be capable of establishing the suitability of any site for a treatment system, design solutions for difficult sites and oversee the installation of a system in accordance with the design requirements. The learner will be able to apply the principles microbiology, hydrogeology and hydrology to ensure systems are designed to effectively protect the environment.

They will bring a level of professionalism to this industry that is currently experiencing a higher level of regulation in an attempt to ensure septic systems can function without causing an unacceptable environmental risk.

On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a firm knowledge of Wastewater Treatment;
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of Microbiology, Soil Science, hydrogeology;
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the EPA Code of practice: Treatment Systems for Single House 2009;
  • Apply these skills successfully to complete site assessments across a range of site types;
  • Design solutions for soils with poor drainage properties;
  • Design solutions for shallow soils and sites with high watertables;
  • Communicate designs to Regulatory bodies and Installers;
  • Work with Installers to install systems in accordance with the design requirements;
  • Design effluent distribution systems over a range of percolation area designs;
  • Understand Health and Safetyissues associated with working with wastewater

What are the minimum entry requirements?

All applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Lifelong Learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the programme.
