Course details
What is this course about?
This course is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the role played by Measurement and Control Systems in industry. It is targeted primarily at those already qualified in an engineering/science discipline and who wish to develop a basic understanding of process instrumentation systems.Focusing on the practical application of control strategies to a variety of basic process models, the aim of this course is to enable students to develop a basic practical understanding of 3 Term PID (Proportional, Integral and Derivative) automatic control systems and to apply and configure appropriate control solutions for single variable applications.
Students who successfully complete both courses, the ITC Certificates in Process Control and
Instrumentation and Fundamental PID Control, will be awarded the Special Purpose Award of Certificate in Automatic Control Systems.
On successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the function and operation of process control system components;
- Identify how the process characteristics will contribute to the control system response and performance;
- Explain the principles of operation of On/Off, P, PI and PID control modes;
- Apply different control modes based on process requirements
- Determine correct equipment configuration and controller settings for safe and stable control;
Outline Course Content:
The Control Loop
- Open and closed-loop control, feedback in control systems.
Process Characteristics
- Process lags, dead time, gain. Process reaction curve and dynamic response.
Control Valves
- Common valve and actuator types, ancillary equipment.
Modes of Control
- On-off control, P, PI, PID control. Controller Tuning
controller settings.
- Practical controller tuning, improving “As Found”
controller settings.
Extensive use will be made of a “hands-on” laboratory programme to explore and apply the concepts developed in the classroom.
What are the minimum entry requirements?
Applicants are required to have completed the IT Carlow Certificate in Process Control and Instrumentation before progressing to this programme.
All applicants will be considered on a case-bycase basis. Lifelong Learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the programme.
