What is this course about?

This module has been designed to enhance the understanding of the fundamentals of Direct Current and Alternating Current as applied to basic networks in Domestic, Commercial and Industrial Installations.

It also provides a grounding in understanding final circuits in Electrical Installations and provides an introduction to Electricity Regulations in an Irish context.

The course will, in addition provide a basic understanding of Electrical control circuits for Industrial Applications. The module will allow the learner to install basic final circuits in a controlled environment and perform tests as required on these circuits.

This course is not an alternative to formal training as an Electrician.

On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Describe the need for automatic disconnection in Electrical systems for safety;
  • Apply single phase Alternating Current theory to the solution of problems involving electrical quantities;
  • Select suitable wiring systems and circuits for Domestic situations;
  • Demonstrate a Familiarity with the ETCI rules ET 101 :2008;
  • Apply standard methods to determinecable current carrying capacities using ETCI Regulations;
  • Appreciate the principles of and need for the Testing of Electrical Installations;
  • Describe the basic control circuits used in 3 phase motor starters.

What are the minimum entry requirements?

Preferably Leaving Cert or Electrical Apprentices with 1st year completed or others with suitable Experience such as Mechanical Maintenance Personnel, Facilities Maintenance Personnel/ Technicians. Any persons of other trades or professions who want to enhance their knowledge of Electrical Installations.

All applicants will be considered on a caseby-case basis. Lifelong Learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the programme Progression on to Process Control & Instrumentation.

Students who sucessfully complete this programme may proceed to the Process Control & Instrumentation course.
