    Clay is the one of the oldest materials that mankind uses to create things. These short courses provide an introduction to the basic techniques and knowledge involved in the practice of studio ceramics. Through hands-on sessions that are designed to impart a range of production approaches, students will have the chance to experience and acquire knowledge in the aspect of hand-building to mould making and wheel throwing. Upon completion, participants will understand the entire process of turning clay into ceramic, and acquire the ability to produce ceramic objects that are aesthetically appealing.

    Course Outine

    Ceramic 1 - Hand-building
    This is an introductory course to the approaches and processes of hand-building construction involved in studio ceramic practices. This short course is designed to give participants a basic understanding into clay as a material for artistic expression. Imparting techniques and knowledge within the area of coiling and slab constructed forms, students will be exposed to the entire process of ceramic making – from construction to glazing and firing of clay into ceramic art.
    Ceramic 2 - Throwing I (Domestic Wares)
    An ancient craft which fascinates many people - the art of producing pots on the pottery wheel is also known as throwing. This is an introduction to the creation of simple domestic objects using the pottery wheel. Students will acquire the knowledge and technical skills of creating variations of functional vessels – from the making of different forms of cups and mugs, to bowls and platters.
    Ceramic 3 - Throwing II (Decorative Forms)
    A continuation of Throwing I (Domestic Wares), Throwing II is designed to elevate the understanding and mastering of the process of pottery making. Students will progress towards throwing complex forms on the pottery/ throwing wheel - from vases to lidded containers and eventually teapots. The process of shaping the soft clay on the pottery wheel will expose students to different sets of skills and understandings guided by the instructor. The approaches of assembling wheel thrown elements will also be explored through the process of teapot making.
    Ceramic 4 - Mould Making
    Within the context of ceramic production, mould plays an important role to enable the repetition of identical ceramic objects. This short course will introduce the two key aspects of repetition production using mould - press mould & slip-cast mould. Students will be guided through the entire processes of mould making from the beginning of producing the prototype, to the utilisation of the mould they produce.

    Requirements

    • Applicants must be 17 years old & above.
    • For Ceramic 2, applicants need to complete Ceramic 1 (within a year)
    • For Ceramic 3, applicants need to complete Ceramic 1 & 2 (within a year)
    • For Ceramic 4, applicants need to complete Ceramic 1,2 & 3 (within a year)

    Will I recieve a certificate of completion?

    Students will be presented a Certificate upon successful completion of all 4 short courses and passing all required assessment.
