When seeking employment these days it is important to have as much experience as possible in the area of work you wish to pursue. This course provides students with a broad range of skills in Carpentry and Joinery.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Leaving Certificate or equivalent. All applicants are interviewed and places are awarded on suitability. Mature students without formal qualifications are most welcome to apply.

COURSE CONTENT

The following subjects may be offered:

Building Construction

This subject is designed to equip the learner with the practical knowledge of the construction principles for the envelope of a standard modern two-storey domestic dwelling. It introduces the learner to a range of construction techniques, materials and quantities.

Renewable Energy Systems

This subject provides an overview of renewable energy technologies and covers topics such as energy and services requirements, site suitability, micro-hydro systems, biomass, solar thermal systems, building design features, photovoltaic, domestic wind turbines and battery storage. It combines both theory and its applications to real situations.

Safety & Health at Work

This subject promotes and maintains safety and health in a work environment, with particular reference to furniture workshop and wood finishing activities.

Wood Fabrication

This subject is designed to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge necessary to use wood in the construction of a modern two-storey domestic dwelling and formwork techniques.

Computer Aided Draughting

This subject covers computer technology as a design tool, a presentation media and a means of producing working drawings. 2D AutoCAD is the main focus.

Work Experience

This subject allows the learner to participate in the workplace for a limited time, carrying out work-related tasks independently while under general direction. Learners may nominate placements at joinery workshops, construction companies, builder suppliers or architecture/engineering offices.

Communications

This subject teaches the learner to communicate verbally and nonverbally, using traditional and modern media.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Career opportunities include apprenticeships in carpentry and joinery, cabinet making and draughtsmanship. Branching into engineering & architecture & construction management.
