Course details
The aim of the CARe Youth Service Programme (CYSP) is to empower youth and position them for future employment, with specific skills within the HIV and AIDS support field. This year has seen an enormous growth in the number of youth that have joined the CYSP. When Community AIDS Response first received funding from National Youth Services in 2005 to launch the Youth Service Programme, there were 12 students admitted to the course of study in areas of service provided by CARe. In 2006, there were 50 students and in 2009, after receiving 160 applications, 100 students were accepted into CYSP.
Over the course of a year, students enrolled in the CARe Youth Service Programme receive training that covers a range of skills unique to the field of HIV and AIDS through classroom instruction along with practical study in the hospitals and clinics staffed by CARe. Additional learning from trainings in Community Development, Business Skills and Life Skills is given to the students as well. Participants are offered the opportunity to specialise in either Counselling or Home Based Care; courses focused in either area are offered throughout the year of training. Focus trainings are also provided on topics such as TB, Addiction, STI’s, Sexuality and Gender. Following their classroom coursework, the learners rotate between our hospital and clinical sites to gain practical experience as counsellors and home based caregivers.
Upon completion of the Youth Service Programme, learners receive six months of “after care” support from CARe to facilitate transition to additional learner-ships, employment opportunities, or pursuit of other educational interests. The development of emotional maturity, increased self-esteem and confidence through CYSP gives programme graduates the to interact with the world. We believe that the youth who have made it into the programme are dynamic and committed and that they are deeply aware of the importance of their role as young people working in the HIV and AIDS sector.

Community AIDS Response (CARe) is a non-profit organisation, founded by Jenny Marcus and launched in November 2000. CARe started as a concerned community of volunteers’ response to the needs of people living with and impacted by HIV/AIDS. Nine years later, CARe still aims to provide quality holistic care and support for people living with HIV and AIDS, their families and the people who offer this care. CARe, through its dedicated team of professional and lay caregivers, volunteers, funders and supporters offers these services to the communities of Johannesburg through the hospitals and clinics and into people’s homes.
