Who should complete this course?

  • Learners who wish to gain a QQI credit in Care of the Older Person Level 5.

Learners who successfully complete this course will:

  • demonstrate good work practices in the provision of individualised holistic care for older people
  • understand the concept of the ageing process
  • be able to meet the full range of needs of older people in a variety of care settings
  • enhance the quality of life of the older person.

This distance learning, QQI accredited course means that Students can study flexibly at home, or at any convenient place and time, and can gain an Internationally Recognised Qualification.

Students receive a comprehensive Course Manual, Assignments, Efficient Studyguide, and unlimited one-to-one Tutor Support for the course duration. The course documentation for this QQI certified course is detailed and easy to read. If students require extra time to complete the course they can apply for an extension.

Topics covered include:

  • Unit 1 Ageing Process
  • Unit 2 Working with the Older Person
  • Unit 3 Caring for the Older Person with Specific Needs
  • Unit 4 Care Settings.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites:

  • Level 4 Certificate, or Leaving Cert, and/or equivalent qualifications, or relevant life and work experience.
  • Students must be working or on work experience in the Healthcare Sector throughout their course as assignments will require learners to draw upon practical experience.
  • If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you. You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
  • As this programme is delivered through distance learning or eLearning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.
  • If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.

Special Requirements:

  • Candidates should hold an Irish Heart Level 3 Heart Saver CPR Certificate or equivalent.

*NB – This module can be completed as part of the Major Award in healthcare Support where the Work Experience Module is in order to carry out practical demonstrations as part of the assessment criteria for this module, students undertaking this module as a single module not as part of the Healthcare Support Course will need to secure the agreement of a work place supervisor/mentor in order to carry out these practical demonstrations.
