WEEKLY: LECTURE 5 HOURS/WEEK. LAB 13 HOURS/WEEK

Section 1 - Pattern Making
  • Introduction to flat pattern-making methods and concepts
  • Mannequin/measurement taking
  • Drafting basic pattern blocks - front and back bodice, waistbands, hems
  • Draft manipulations - darts
  • Draft special components of a garment - fly zipper, kick pleats, vents, pockets
  • Design analysis - personal measurements, garment fitting principles, assessing garment fit, alterations to correct fit
  • Terminology of garment and pattern parts
  • Pattern marking, labeling, and pattern sequence
  • Draft sleeve, skirt and pant slopers
  • Draft button-up shirt pattern
  • Draft dress sloper
  • Draft flared/gored/pleated skirt patterns
  • Introduce collar/sleeve manipulations
  • Introduce and draft patterns for knit fabrics (active wear) - T-shirt, polo shirt, leggings, bodysuit, hoodie, jacket.
  • Draft men's bodice sloper, men's shirt
  • Draft kid's bodice sloper, princess style line dress
 
Section 2 - Garment Assembly
  • Use of equipment, maintenance, and safety
  • Sewing practices
  • Sewing tools
  • Identifying fabrics and weaves
  • Fabric characteristics - grain, weight
  • Identifying different types of fusing
  • Threading a machine
  • Practice sewing straight line, curve line and back stitch
  • Using notches
  • Construct special components of a garment - fly zipper, kick pleats, vents, pockets
  • Cut, mark, and sew garments
  • Construction techniques - stitches, seams, hem finishes, zipper applications, waistband applications, pleats, vents, pockets, and lining
  • Garment assembly methods and sequencing
  • Complete sewing sample reference booklet
  • Sew samples constructed from your manipulated pattern blocks for a 6-piece collection

The Pattern Making and Construction Module consists of 16 weeks of intensive skill building. The course enables students to become industry proficient in Pattern Making, fit and sewing construction. The first six weeks are dedicated to learning the fundamentals of pattern making, fit and sewing, and by Week 7 students choose their ‘design’ stream: active/technical wear, evening wear, contemporary women’s or menswear. A small class size of 12 allows for individual attention, where we provide an industry-level professional environment and the opportunity for students to learn the necessary specialized skills through hands-on training by highly qualified professors. Students produce garments throughout their studies and create a cohesive 6-piece collection as their final project. Some sewing experience is required. sheets, and costing of markers. Some manual pattern making experience is recommended to take this course.
